ART in Center of life

As my group's focus for the project is on the different venues of college students, I found some images of places where students like to come together and enjoy. What was shocking while I found these pictures was that, although some are difficult to be counted as a venue but people can enjoy their life through many different means. It is all because of the difference in our taste in life. I think this is why there are so many different revolutions, genres and view on art. But the question that came to my mind was why can a specific art theme be seen in different eras such as the renaissance when people obviously seem to like different things? Why do we not find five different themes in art within one era?

ART in concept Designs

I found some interesting concept designs of many different things. Imagination is like the spark that can start an entire forest in fire (but in a positive way) and as I look at these concept designs, I always wonder if there is a limit to imagination and if there is, when will we reach that dead end.

ART in Design

With the development of technology, I believe art and design has become more and more closer. Art takes time to make. An artwork starts from brain storming, sketching, drawing, painting, creating, revising, revising, revising, revising....... So does design. Just like any art work, design starts from brain storming. The architect needs to have a basic idea of what he is creating. Then simple sketches are made on paper so that the architect can remember the artwork he was going to make and also to be able to more easily visualize the basic idea of the thing me is making. Some might not agree but from brain storming stage, creation of an artwork has already begun.
As we can see below are some of the stages for making a steering system. Now as many people knows, steering system is only one small part of the entire car.
first the main body is made.

then specific parts are made to put into the main body.
then a simple assembly of some parts are made.
and then those assemblies are assembled again to create the entire system, or the sub system of the entire system or the goal(car)

Visiting the High Museum of ART

As a person who have only been to few museums, I was excited to go to the high again. Maybe it is because of my great expectation, I was not very impressed with the exhibition. The exhibition consisted of drawings and paintings of venetian art. The moment I entered the exhibition, I started to read the description of the exhibition and was depressed by the few amount of artworks that are present.
The first area of the exhibition was where the drawings were present. out of the entire exhibition, I think the drawings where the best not because I prefer sketches over paintings but also because the drawing section of the exhibition consisted of sketches that showed the progress of each artists artworks. It fascinated me how much process one has to go through to create a master piece.
The second section and the third floor consisted of artworks by Titian and other artists. The paintings didn't interest me be cause they were normal paintings of portraits of people or different stories such as the story of Diana. Although the details of the painting impressed me a lot but the commoness of the theme made me dislike the second portion of the exhibition.

Smithsonian Museum

Smithsonian Museum is one of the largest Museum in the world. The Smithsonian focuses on education and research of the people. With most of the facilities located in Washington, Smithsonian is a government funded institute that includes 9 research centers and 19 museums and zoos. The institute was founded by a British scientist named James Smithsonian who donated his money for the "Establishment for the increase & diffusion of Knowledge among men". There are several art museums in the Smithsonian museum but  the one that I want to talk about is the Hirshhorn museum. The Hirshhorn museum, designed by Gordon Bunshaft, started around 1960 with the permanent art collections of Joseph Hirshhorn. Hirshhorn museum is an important museum in America because it is the first museum devoted to modern art. There are around 6000 art works in the museum. Most of the art works focuses on French sculpture, 19th-century American painting, and the first generation of the New York School. A famous part of the Hirshhorn museum is the garden. The garden contains artworks of traditional historical themes that addresses emotion, politics, religion, and economics.

There are many amazing designs in the world designed by many artists, the design that most amaze me are Davinci's designs. Davinci is a man who literally designed everything. Starting from sculptures, artworks, and even war machines. Davinci's two most famous artworks are probably the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. However his mechanical designs are all very famous as well. What is interesting about Davinci's mechanical designs is that a lot of them actually does operate. On the bottom are pictures of some of the mechanical designs designed by Da Vinci. Some of other things Da Vinci was interested in drawing are anatomy, religious artworks, and complicated mathematical designs.

Duncan

Art Museum as Ritual. In the article, Duncan explained how art museums are skewing the meaning of the artwork. He talks about how museum is like a place for ritual where people went to each art work one by one, just like how some people would go to their religious temple. Although he made a lot of good points, I disagree in some areas. First of all, religious people going to their religious temple and public walking around the museum is a totally different thing. Religious people are going to temple to pray, and spend their time submitting to their Lord. However public walking around the museum has nothing to do with submitting their life to a supernatural in authority. Duncan also talked about how museums create an environment that changes the feeling of the art work. However, is there a way to display an artwork without changing its original meaning? Unless museums can send people back in time to when the artwork was first created, it is impossible to create an area that will not change the feeling one gets from an artwork.

ART in Lord of the Rings.

Lord of the Rings, probably the world most famous trilogy ever existed, contains a lot of art. The first art work we see is obviously the ring. The Master ring may look very simple on the outside but I believe there can be no other ring existing in the world that can replace the master ring. The simple spherical design makes the ring look so perfectly spherical that its perfection even entice the audience to want it as well.

Minas Tirith - movie
The second artwork I want to talk about is Minas Tirith. Minas Tirith is a castle controlled by Gondor. Minas Tirith, also called the white city, represents its name very well, as we can see in the movie, the entire castle is carved out of white rocks and when the white light shines on the castle, it reflects the white color so much that it makes the audience imagine the Minas Tirith as the holy city.
rivendell3_lrg
The last artwork I want to talk about is Rivendell, the house of Elrond. i believe if was given a chance to choose a house to live in, my choice would be Rivendell. The harmony between nature and Rivendell is so strong that sometimes I feel like Rivendell is the nature it self. Not only is the outside of the Rivendell beautiful but the interior design is marvelous as well.

The visual essay

The visual essay presentations we did this week were very interesting. In such a small area, we were able to pull off different interpretation of the public art. Not only that but some students were even able to pull off different interpretation from a single object.
The visual essay presentation really pushed me to think through everything so that I can try to understand why certain things are designed in certain way. My visual essay was about trashcans and how the history of trashcan is the best representation of the development of human civilization. When I was taking pictures of trashcan I was surprised by how significant the common thing as trashcan could be in explaining the development of human civilization. In fact the more common something is the more important because it is something that we demand more.
The presentation of other students really helped me think about different arts deeply and helped me realize many things I that would never have thought of. Such as the symmetries formed between the nature and human designs, or the meaning that different fences portrays. I feel like these visual essays really helped me take a step forward in the meaning of art and how we should appreciate art more.

YIN YANG public ART

The symbol of Yin and Yang is probably one of the the worlds most commonly known symbol by people. It is a Taoist symbol that symbolizes harmony. There are two sides to all things and through harmony of those two sides, everything exists. But why is there a white dot on the black area and black dot on the white area. Because without those dots, harmmony cannot exists. The only reason why two sides can coexist is because both side have a little bit of each other. The lines on the side represents the different elements that are thought of as the fundamental element of the world. The main five elements believed by the Taoists includes, fire, metal, water, wood, and rock. Many people may dislike taoism because they don't like to accept other religion but take a look at the symbol and try to think  of harmony between anything. You will realize how it is not a non  sense idea.

Civilization

Civilization, what does it mean? What does it represent? The random house dictionary's explanation of civilization is 'an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached.' People have always been saying how we are more civilized then the people in the past. We are more organized, stronger, and better educated. We can talk days about how we are more civilized but where is our proof. If we can go back in time, how are we going to show those old philosophers that we are more civilized. Because clearly to those people empire and kingdom is a better choice. The answer is Trashcan.

Religion and public ART

Public art is a great method to motivate the public to head for a certain goal. In the case of religion many public art is used to attract the public to become its believer. For example, cathedrals, mosques, temples, and performances that just look so magnificent to the publics eyes. Using public art to attract the public is good in that it is very affective. Public art can be seen by anyone, can be approached by anyone, and it is also less criticized for however it looks. However it is bad in that it can give a very one sided view on the religion. For example, if a person looks at a mosque or cathedral, the person can easily connect Islam and Catholicism  with wealth or power. These two religions are definitely powerful but not in every places. Also not every Muslim and Catholic is wealthy and powerful. So when public art is used, we should be careful not only to give a good view of what it is representing but also be careful to interpret the public art.
National Cathedral Picture

Importance of public ART

Public art. Why do we even have public art? Public art exists because it is the symbol of civilization and development. As number of humans increased in the past, we started to become organized, classes started to form, and difference in individual became visible. As these changes occured, people needed a symbol that can represent their position, belief and ideology. To represent these, public art began and people started to display themselves through art. For example makeup it is a very organized way to expose one self's emotion. Many people in the world do makeup because they want others to view them in a certain way. Some wants other to be attracted to them, some wants  to hide one's feeling from others, some even wants to display ones emotion through art by paintings such as bees on the face before a football game. Makeup is not the only example where we can see people becoming more civilized or organized through public art, another great example is trashcan. many people don't realize that trashcan is a public art and how it represent organization or civilization. before trashcan existed, people threw trash anywhere, its like chaos, there was no limits, there was no rules. However, since the existence of trash can, people started to gather useless junk in one area, although most of the time we don't know what to do with a large pile of  trash but still, they are piling in one area, not every where in the world. This is why public art is important, because it symbolize civilization and every single public art can be used in many different ways!

best public ART

Public art. It is the most commonly seen art, but it is also one of the most affective art that exists. Public art is an artwork that well represents the area it is located in, it gives identity and reflects on the daily life of that public area. With this definition, I believe there is no public art better then the national flag, for example the Korean national flag, called Tae Gek Ki (태극기). National flag is the best public art because it is created around the culture and the ideologies of the nation it is representing. It is made to symbolize a country, a public area to the people with that nationality. When ever there is a national event, or presentation about a nation, one of the first thing people talk about is the nations flag and how it reflects the nation it is representing. It shows how naturally we seek basic knowledge of a nation from its national flag, which shows its importance.

In the middle of Korean national flag, there is a circle with two colors on it. This represents yin and yang, which shows how much influence Confucius has on Korea. The red represents the sky and the blue represents the ground, It is because Koreans believe they are the sons of God, they believe that one of their ancestor was married to a prince in heaven. The three bars on top left is called Kun, it represents heaven, spring, east, and relationship. Four bars on bottom left is called Kon, it represents land, summer, west, and justice. Five bars on top right is called Kam, it represents the sun, fall, south and courtesy. And lastly the six bars on bottom right is called Li, it represents the moon, winter, north, and wisdom.

manga, the caricature of imagination, the source of ART

Manga. I feel like when ever a person cannot express an idea through plays, dramas, or movies, they would turn to manga because in manga everything is possible. In fact, the only limit we have with manga is our imagination itself. My favorite manga is the Gundam series. I like it not only because it has a great storyline and a great actions, but also because of the interesting ideas people have with machines. A connection between human and robot that will be used to bring peace to the world is I think the best dream that an engineer could have.
Manga is such a great tool for communication, especially with younger audiences, that the audience tend to accept many things displayed in manga without questioning why. This leads to a good side and a bad side to manga. The good side is that it is easy to communicate and give information to the audience. The bad side is that because it is so effective in communicating, people might confuse it with reality and actually start to imitate things that happen in manga. This could lead to danger and even threaten one's life. So just like plays, dramas, and movies, we should be careful when watching manga and really think through and understand what the manga is trying to tell before watching it.

The best reality reflecting ART

Since long time ago, people have been interested in creating plays, dramas, and movies. One interesting thing about these things is that they always seem to reflect the reality in some sort of way. For example, Romeo and Juliet is a play about strong love between two people, which is commonly seen in reality. Or the movie Matrix reflects on the contrast between good and evil, development of AI, and the ideas people have about reality, in the real world.
Just like an artwork, plays, dramas, and movies communicate, and it is done by asking questions to the audience, such as ' what if the world you are in is not the real world?' By asking these questions, plays, dramas, and movies, help the audience think deeply about the reality and really try to understand the reality more. However, we do have to realized that plays, movies, and dramas sometimes focus on one side of the reality so much that it starts to skew the reality and create a caricature of reality. This caricature does so well in skewing the reality without making people notice, that they it starts to have more and more influence on the person. So it  is always good to watch plays, dramas, and movies, but we also do need to be careful. Make sure that we are not accepting what is wrong or what we shouldn't accept and always watch out for the influence a single movie can have in our future.

my cup my favorite ART

My favorite cup sitting in the cabinet.
An empty cup sits in my cabinet. Like an empty piece of paper it sits, and like a dark night it is silent.
But it is still my Favorited cup sitting in the cabinet.
I picked up the empty cup that sits in my cabinet. Like an empty space it sits on my hand, cold, but like a bright light, it brings me happiness.
I filled the cup with hot water, should I say it is half filled or half empty, but it doesn't matter because now the cup is talking to me.

It tells me to be healthy.
It tells me to be happy.
It brings me warmth.
It brings me hope.
But before I try to tell the cup 'thank you'
it goes back into the darkness and coldness.

My cup is my favorite cup is the best artwork that exists to me so far. Even though a cup is a common material, and many people may have the similar cup, but none are the same as my cup because my cup contains characters that can only be seen in dreams. It also communicates to me like none other materials communicates to me.

ART of emotion

What do you see from the masks bellow?

Happy Face
Sad Face
Lonely Face
Lovely Face

A single human face can have thousand of facial expressions and we can change it as frequently as we want. One second someone can enter a room smiling while on the other second the same person might leave the room crying. It is as if everybody is wearing a mask, a mask that can hide us from others, a mask that can protect our privacy, and a mask that can influence others masks. That is why our expressions and how others look at our expressions are very important because our face communicates to others about ones feeling. Humans are social, we cry with those who cry, we laugh with those who laugh, and we interact with those who interact. So is our face social on its own, when we see danger our face pales, when we see happiness our face opens, and when we feel love our face flush. One may think a pokerface does not express anything, but pokerface is a best way to tell others how 'I will not tell what I know.' So after all there is not a facial expression that doesn't communicate.
So what is my point? Our face is ART.

ART in math

Art can exist every where. In fact even logical things such as math is art and can create art. There is a famous artwork in China that has 100 different horses each with different facial expressions. When I saw this artwork I wondered why 100? Why not 101 or 10. It is probably because in that specific culture 100 had a more significant meaning then other numbers, so by painting 100 horses, the painter was able to reveal some culture through art. Another great example of art in math would be in design. Now a days design require a computer software to more precisely show the idea a person has behind the shape of building, car, computer, cellphone, or even clothes. Without math and functions that run the program, many difficult designs would not be able to be displayed which makes it harder for people to communicate their ideas. Lastly I believe that numbers used in math is another way to communicate with other people so it should also be considered an art. The unique shape of each numbers and how they are positioned requires creativity just like creating artworks require creativity.

Christ of Saint John of the Cross

The art work Christ of Saint John of the Cross is a famous work painted by Dali. The most noticeable thing about this art work is the size. The humongous size of the artwork is what I think makes this artwork a very powerful artifact. When looking at the art work, the size of it makes the cross and Christ seem so real that the event is happening right at front of my eyes. It made me feel that Dali was trying to tell the people about the magnificence of Christs authority. Another important thing to note about this artwork is that it is very different from the traditional artworks related to Crucifixion. No one in the picture in crying, we don't see blood, suffering, thorn, nails and the two other sinners who died with Christ. This shows how to Dali, the traditional symbols of Crucifixion is not what it is all about, its about the concept of crucifixion and how God came down to die for human kind and then resurrect again from death.

The Summary of all ART

In this world there are many unique machines that are created by humans: telephone, computer, mouse, clock, air conditioner, refrigerator, and even door locks. However none of these inventions are as similar to art as an airplane. Airplane is made out of every single machine design that one can imagine. It can roll like a car, it contains computers for each individual guests to use, it requires an engine that is stronger then that of any land machines, and it even contains wings that no other machines have.
Airplanes are summary of all art not only because of what it is made out of, but also because of the effort that is put into make each individual planes. The amount of details and calculations put into an airplane is just like, if not more then the amount of colors that exists in an art work. All different colors may look ugly when they are independent, but when they are mixed with each other, they create a beautiful harmony that nothing can compare to. Just like that, all different details and calculations will come to a harmony, and this harmony will allow people to fly. The time that it took for human to make an airplane is like the time of an artist. Just like how an artist spends most of the life time creating his artworks, human kind spent most of the time on earth dreaming of flying, designing and redesigning different ways to fly.
Most importantly airplanes are summary of all art because just like how an artwork connects the artist to the audience, airplanes connects people to people, culture to culture, and nation to nation. It is a device that humans must have in order to better survive together.

Open your minds

Different cultures have different standard of good and that is a fact that many believes in. When I read the article that Benjamine wrote, I may have misunderstood his intentions, and if I did I would apologize for my writing. However, his writings, to me, clearly showed how much he dislikes dadaism, which is fine, but comparing dadaism in to an instrument of ballistics? Sayng that dadaists destroyed the aura of their creation? That to me sound nothing more then an insult. Yes, art, in the three levels of economy, is a service sector and the best way for service sector to develope is through critques. But insults are not critiques, insults are destruction, and when I read chapter 14 of the article, I felt like the author was insulting dadaism.
Dadaism is a movement made by a group of artists and it became a part of their culture, or lives. When the author said 'they intended and achieved was a relentless destruction of the aura of their creations', to me it felt like some one was telling me that my culture is evil.  Which is probably not something that the author wants to hear when someone is talking about his culture in such way.
I do have to admit though by choosing to use this kind of diction, the author made clear of his point about what film did to art. However I feel that the choice of Benjamine's words were a little too offensive.

Just like an artwork

Its been two weeks since I first came to Gatech and there was not a single time in those 14 days when I didn't like Gatech because Georgia Tech is just like an artwork. Just like an artwork full of meaning, Georgia Tech is full of unique students. Especially students who can solve problems. Just like an artwork that can influence the mind of the entire world, Georgia Tech students influence the entire world with their engineering skills. Just like an artwork that flows harmoniously, Georgia Tech students are closely connected to each other always trying to be beneficial. Just like an artwork that stands out among millions of other art works, students from Georgia Tech always stands out in their field of education. Just like an artwork with good meanings, there is a good word in Georgia tech.
What's the good word?
To HELL with Georgia

Rubiks cubes

Thousands and millions of art works excists currently in this world and more of them are comming. But in my mind, the most complicated and interesting piece of art work would be the rubik's cube. The rubik's cube is composed of 6 sides and each side divided into 9 parts. The goal of rubiks cube is to mess up all the parts and to put them together like if it is new. Just like how art is a good representative of the world, I think rubik's cube well represents the cycle of the history. Just like how we mix and fix a rubik's cube over and over, our history is full of destruction and reconstruction of each other's culture and lives. Just like how we try to fix the rubik's cube faster, the destruction and reconstruction of our culture and history developes us and helps us create a culture well mixed and intertwined so that just like how some can solve the rubik's cube in few seconds, going from one country to another became a matter of minuites and hours. Understanding each others language is no longer a problem. Accepting others culture became very easy.
In this world there has always been someone who is able to fix the rubiks cube faster but I believe there will come a day when there is a record that no one could break. Just like that I hope this world can one day be so great that nothing could make it better.

European ART Since 1985

Since the first step I took into the High Museum to see the European design since 1985, I had a feeling that the artworks defined post modernism. Many designs seemed like a mixture of many different concept, and in fact the European design since 1985 did compose of different medias including furniture, glass, ceramics, metalworks, etc. However, each artworks were unique and were concentrating on their own media. All the artworks were unique because they were furnitures with their own decorative design, unlike the mundane furnitures we see in homes. These designs, not judged with functional and technological concept, were focused on poetic and artistic area of artworks, which represented the aesthetic and intellectual movement at the time. Some furnitures were composed of simple geometric shapes so that they can be mass produced and be a part of every day life. However, as I took a closer look, there was no pattern that can be found to summarize the artworks, which made each of them unique. The conceptual design had artworks with blur line, which gave each furnitures multiple meanings. The multiple meanings in the artworks gave these designs a feeling of dry intellectual humor. If we compare it to English it would be something like a pun. When I saw these designs I had a feeling that the artists were challenging me with the definition of art. Similar to conceptual design was Neo Dada design, which instead of giving blur line, it displayed ambiguous, random, and irrational forms of furniture designs. I had a feeling that the artworks were getting more and more post modern since I saw Neo Dada design. Another design that I was interested in was Neo Decorative design. These designs emphasized on decorative and aesthetic qualities of design and furnitures. To emphasize on the decorativeness, the furnitures displayed bold colors with patterns. The artworks seemed to be able to decorate all kinds of places, in fact I had hard time imagining anyone sitting on one of the chairs without destroying the decoration.

Our Life is ART

A life without, chairs, desks, beds, cups, and other furnitures would be miserable since these furnitures help us do what we cannot do. As I walked through the European design in the High Museum I realized how even the most simplest furnitures are designs that took an artist a lot of time and creativity to create. Most of the artworks are so common in modern day that we use them without thanking the artist's effort. All these furnitures look easy to make, however we have to realize that it takes time and energy to think of such designs and actually create them without anyone's help.
When I saw these furnitures, I only cared about their usage. However, as I tried to communicate with the artist and the artwork, I started to see the furnitures differently. The change in focus of European artists in 1985 from the functional and technological concept to poetic and artistic concept started to make sense. My questions of why are these common furnitures in an exhibition, why are these furnitures designed in this way, all these why, why, and why are answered by a simple question through this exhibition. Decorative and industrial design can both exist in an art work. The bond between art, design, and craft is unbreakable.

What is ART?

What is art? Art is a creative design with its own purpose, and everything in this world is creative design. So art is everything and everything is united by art, just like the puzzle pieces, when you open a puzzle box you see lots of puzzle pieces each with its own distinct colors. When these pieces are combined together in the end, they will create a master piece that worth more than anything. So what is the purpose of art? The purpose of art is to make it easier for everyone to understand each other. As we can see in the picture, because of art we can breathe together, we can smile together, and can we fight together. Without art we could not survive because through art we communicate, we interact, we rest, we work, and we find the purpose of our lives. So over all art is a creative design made to help everyone understand.
